The Catcher in the Rye — NOT a Baseball Book
Not to brag, but since the start of quarantine I have been doing some reading. Most of the reading that I’ve done consists of the classics I’d missed while growing up. It’s more than likely that most of you read these novels in high school or college (or middle school for you pompous shits). I figured that if I’d missed out on any of the books that have stood the test of time, it’s best to go back and cover them before moving forward. The latest on the list of classics was The Catcher in the Rye. It was an above average novel, but certainly not my favorite. Where I can truly understand where the book stakes its claim to fame is in creating the marketing standard for clickbait titles.
Like all of the modern-day savants, I’ve gone just about my whole life as an educated scholar thinking that this book was about baseball; boy was I wrong. This book had less to do with baseball than The Bible. Sure, it was just as meandering, depressing, and filled with some decent morals, but I was never more upset than to get about halfway through and realize that Holden was never going to pick up a bat.
To be fair to author JD Salinger, I don’t exactly know why I would’ve thought that there would be a catcher in rye? Maybe like a Field of Dreams prequel or sequel thing? Nevertheless, to have the word “catcher” in the book’s title and not write a story about baseball is false advertisement at its finest. Sure, it makes some sense when they get to the end and the po-*yeah read the book you dope. I’m not just going to tell you what happens (also if you don’t know where the book gets its title just know that I am superior to you in all facets of life).
Anyway, reading has been a great benefit to my life as I try and rid of my phone addiction. Shoot me any recommendations you have. Also, yes I did basically just write this blog to tell you all that I read books and that I’m super smart and cultured.
